About SickKids

Message from the President and CEO

Mary Jo Haddad

Welcome to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), the largest paediatric academic health sciences centre in Canada.

SickKids strength is the integration of its three core businesses: patient care, research and learning. The Hospital is well-known throughout Canada and around the world for innovation, excellence, compassion and family-centred care. Our Emergency Department counts 50,000 visits a year, our clinics, 175,000, and our in-patient departments, 13,000.

Established in 1875, SickKids has a long-standing tradition of providing the best possible care for children and for health promotion. Take Pablum, which our doctors invented in the 1930s to prevent malnutrition among infants. Royalties from the sale of Pablum led to the foundation of our Research Institute in 1954. Over the years, the Institute has become known as home for many leading scientists whose work attracts international attention.

Affiliated with the University of Toronto, we have always focused on learning – no more so than today when technology has accelerated the rate of discovery and dramatically increased our knowledge base. To help us understand and capture what matters in the care of children, we established the Learning Institute in 2007.

Through education of health professionals and researchers, international conferences, licensing of products, site visits, publications and personal interaction, we share our knowledge with the world at large. With a passionate and dedicated staff, and unparalleled community support through SickKids Foundation, we are guided by the vision: Healthier Children. A Better World.
