2011 Paediatric Brain Tumour Education Day

A mixture of b.r.a.i.n.child parents, b.r.a.i.n.child funded researchers and students gathered in the SickKids Auditorium November 13 for a newly-formatted Education Day.  Dr. James Rutka welcomed all to the day and gave a meaningful tribute to Dr. Ab Guha, Co-Director of the BTRC who had passed away that week.  A moment of silence was observed for Dr. Guha.
Attendees heard about exciting research discoveries which could lead to new and improved diagnoses and treatments from Dr. Michael Taylor.  Dr. Brent Derry spoke about his work with worms and how it relates to brain tumour treatments and research.  Who knew worms could teach us so much?

Two students whose projects received funding from b.r.a.i.n.child, Tiffany Chan from the Huang Lab and Nataliya Zhokova from the Tabori Lab shared information about their projects, what they have learned and where they hope to take the information.  Dr. Sunit Das the newest scientist in the BTRC talked about his research, which is getting it's start in Canada from b.r.a.i.n.child funding.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Stewart Goldman from Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital brought levity to the serious topic of paediatric brain tumour research.  The information shared and Dr. Goldman’s comedic presence concluded the Education Day aptly.

Following the speakers, attendees gathered in the Rotunda for lunch, social time and an opportunity to view the many posters from b.r.a.i.n.child funded researchers.

Plans are already underway for the 2012 event.
