Buchwald looks back on ten years of teamwork and teaching

After 35 years as a scientist at SickKids and ten years as Chief of Research, Dr. Manuel Buchwald retired in 2005. During his decade as chief, he was responsible for further integrating research into the hospital. His greatest memories though, were forged in the way the individuals at SickKids work together in a rich, collaborative environment. To him, this is what makes SickKids the envy of other institutions.

What gives SickKids’ research its unique flavour is the spirit of collegiality and collaboration that underpins much of its activity. …During the past decade we have formalized and expanded our mentoring of younger scientists both through the Scientist-Track program and through the more conventional mentoring that had previously been carried out informally. This is what I am most proud of about the SickKids Research Institute.

Annual Report

The Scientist-Track program was designed as an appointment for practicing clinicians to transition smoothly from post-doctoral fellows to fully independent scientists. Researchers in the program are paired up with mentors who help to foster further development of their research skills. In the first ten years of the program (1996 to 2006) 35 investigators completed the Scientist-Track Investigator program. The program continues to this day, with many notable graduates established in labs across SickKids Research Institute.
