Centre for the Study of Complex Childhood Diseases

Physiology & Experimental Medicine (PEM) is in the process of creating a state-of-the-art research facility that will enable whole body, physiological, pharmacological, neurological and nutritional metabolic translation research for complex childhood diseases including: rare disease cohorts, complex care, transplant, cystic fibrosis (CF), asthma and sleep disorders. This new infrastructure support funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) will enable researchers to create a state-of-the-art patient-based research infrastructure, imaging research facilities for animals and human subjects, as well as analytical infrastructure for drug and metabolite analysis of biological fluids.

The  CSCCD consists of :

Physiological Research Unit (PRU): a clinical research facility  for metabolic, cardiopulmonary and other physiologic studies of both healthy and chronically ill children.  learn more

Animal Physiology Investigation Unit (APRU): a multipurpose lab equipped for physiological assessments of the nervous, heart, digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems.

Analytical Facility for Bioactive Molecules (AFBM): a laboratory equipped for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry for exploratory drug/metabolite analysis. High quality monoclonal antibody producing cell-lines and antibody purification services are also offered. learn more

AFBM Biorepository: a facility equipped to perform tissue and cell culture, cryofreezing and cryostorage for paediatric tissues.

Research MRI Facility: a facility capable of physiological and interventional MRI imaging in both animals and children. This cutting-edge research MRI imaging technology brings the other components of the CSCCD together.  learn more

The Centre for the Study of Complex Childhood Diseases (CSCCD)

SickKids is one of the few institutions in the world capable of hosting an initiative as visionary and as comprehensive as the CSCCD. The CSCCD will be critical for the translation of research discoveries into improvements in the care of children afflicted with complex diseases. These facilities will provide critical support to many researchers.
