About OASIS
Background on the OASIS Project
There is limited data in Ontario, Canada on the incidence and prevalence of asthma at the provincial and sub-provincial levels. In order to improve asthma-related programs, population-based data that capture all hospital admissions, physician visits, asthma related mortality and morbidity, provider practice patterns are necessary. The Ontario Asthma Surveillance Information System (OASIS) was created to provide a population-based longitudinal surveillance system for asthma. It has provided measures of asthma-related morbidity, mortality, health services use, and provider practice patterns through Phase I (Paediatric Asthma Case Verification) and Phase II (Asthma Surveillance and Health Outcomes in Children). Phase III (Full Provincial Implementation of Asthma Surveillance) is nearing completion as analysis of the data is still ongoing.
