Scientific peer review
All applications (except for health chart/database applications) must include a satisfactory science review completed either through the Grants Management Office (for all external grant submissions) or in the investigators' clinical research division/program (for unfunded or industry sponsored protocols). If the application is exempt from the Grants Management Office internal peer review requirements, human subjects research requiring approval will still need satisfactory science review.

A satisfactory science review includes the completion of the Report on Scientific Peer Review form by the committee chair, an itemized response to issues raised, and evidence of final signoff by the chair or Research Director indicating support for the noted revisions. Reviews must include the names of all reviewers that contributed to the review. Usually reviewers will be SickKids staff members however, when necessary, external reviewers should be recruited.
In limited instances, when external scientific review has already occurred and funding awarded, internal SickKids science review will be waived. Please contact the office staff early in the process to confirm whether science review can be waived. Even if internal scientific review has been waived, a copy of the granting agency review must be included in the application package.
Normally, the REB will only review projects with confirmed funding. However in certain circumstances, upon request by the primary investigator, projects without confirmed funding will also be reviewed. Please contact the office staff early for a determination.
